physical abuse – youth
Why this is important: Youth with a history of abuse are at increased risk for unhealthy behaviors and having poor social outcomes. They are more likely to smoke, use illicit drugs, and engage in risky sexual behavior. They are also more likely to be arrested, to be a teen parent, and less likely to graduate from high school.
Definition: Percent of youth in grades 8, 10, and 12 who report an adult ever physically hurt them on purpose (like pushed, slapped, hit, kicked or punched), leaving a mark, bruise or injury.
