Why this is important: Children with disabilities may require specialized assistance with medical care, self-care, and social interactions. Public health, the medical community, the education system, government funding programs (such as SSI), families, and the community all play a role in providing a coordinated approach to managing childhood disabilities.

Definition: Percent of children younger than 18 years of age with a physical, mental, or sensory disability lasting six months or longer.
